13 Reasons Why Season 4 is heading to Netflix in June: Shorter than previous seasons

Are you ready to see how 13 Reasons Why will come to an end? 13 Reasons Why Season 4 is on Netflix in June and will be shorter than past seasons.

Love it or hate it, 13 Reasons Why Season 4 is heading to Netflix in June 2020. It’s the final season of the series, and is going to be shorter than all the previous seasons.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the fourth season is only going to be 10 episodes long. All previous seasons were 13 episodes. The first season made sense—one episode per tape—but after that it was mostly to tailor to young viewers who would have thought a show titled “13” reasons why should have 13 episodes to a season. However, showrunner Brian Yorkey admits that he thinks 10 episodes is the soft spot. This has nothing to do with the coronavirus.

More importantly, 10 episodes works best for the storytelling. It means no fluff to pad out the episodes, something that a lot of TV shows fall guilty of just to spread out a season. We honestly don’t need 22 episodes to a season to tell a story. That leads to standalone, “filler” episodes being needed. Now sometimes, these episodes work. We just look at Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Supernatural to see how they can work, but they can get too much.

Netflix sets the date

Back to 13 Reasons Why Season 4. The full season will officially be available on June 5, 2020. That’s sooner than expected, likely due to cutting the season down by three episodes. That cuts out about a month and a half of filming and post-production work.

It’s going to be interesting to see where the story goes for the final season. The first was focused on Hannah’s tapes while the second season was focused on the aftermath of the tapes and the rape going on at the school. The third season focused on a murder mystery: who killed Bryce. It was a questionable season that saw the main characters happily send a boy down for a crime that he didn’t commit purely because he committed a different crime.

So, where are we for 13 Reasons Why Season 4? We’ll find out close to the release date when Netflix gives us a trailer for the season.
