Anne with an E comes to an end after three seasons
Netflix and CBC have decided not to move forward with more seasons of Anne with an E. Season 3 will officially be the last.
It’s a sad day for Anne with an E fans. The Canadian period drama, which airs on Netflix internationally, will not be renewed for a fourth season.
Netflix and CBC have both decided to bring the period drama, based on the novel series Anne of Green Gables, to an end. It’s certainly a sad day for the cast, crew, and the fans. The least we could have gotten was a final wrap up season, right?
This isn’t just one network that’s decided on the cancellation though. Netflix and CBC both work together on the project. It was originally a Canadian production, with Netflix acquiring the rights to stream internationally. This is something that also happened with the Canadian sci-fi drama Travelers. When the Canadian broadcasters decided not to go ahead with the third season, Netflix saved the drama from being outright canceled. However, the gamble didn’t pay off. With low views, Netflix canceled the series at the end of the third season. It looks like Netflix isn’t willing to risk the same for Anne with an E.
It’s a shame, because Anne with an E may be a period drama, but it has a beautiful and supportive message for today. Anne is an outsider, but fights for acceptance and love. She wants a place in a world that doesn’t seem to want her, with the third season moving into discussions of feminism, gender parity, prejudice, diversity, and much more. These are all topics shared through the lens of a 16-year-old girl, giving it a slightly different take to the one that we’re used to seeing onscreen.
