Black Summer officially renewed for a second season by Netflix
It’s come later than expected but better late than never. Netflix has finally confirmed Black Summer’s status. There will be a second season.
If you loved the zombie apocalypse prequel to Z Nation on Netflix, there’s some excellent news. Black Summer has been officially renewed for a second season.
The renewal comes later than we’d hoped. After all, the majority of Netflix shows are renewed within a month or two of release. Black Summer was released at the beginning of the year, so by this point, we’d wondered whether the series had been canceled. It sounds like the issues to delay the renewal may have been behind the scenes, as there’s been a slight showrunner change and Jaime King, lead star of the series, has been upped to producer.
Black Summer Season 2 will have eight episodes just like the first season. It will likely tell a mini story that’s contained within the eight episodes, just like the first season did. During the first season, we saw a town evacuated after the zombie virus started to spread. However, some were left behind and they all found themselves on journeys to look for safety. That led to personal betrayals, dangerous children, and much more.
Netflix’s zombie series will continue the story with King returning as Rose. Justin Chu Cary and Christine Lee will also return as SPears and Kyungsun respectively, according to Deadline.
Changes behind the scenes
So, what’s the change in showrunner? It’s only a small change. During Season 1, Z Nation creator Karl Schaefer worked with John Hyams as co-showrunners. Schaefer is taking a step back for the second season, with Hyams serving as the only showrunner. It’s not clear is Schaefer is remaining as EP or has stepped away completely, but it sounds like he’s just stepped back. Z Nation‘s Abram Cox will also return as executive producer and writer.

So, when will we get to see the second season? Production won’t start until 2020 in Alberta. So, we’re expecting Black Summer Season 2 to premiere sometime late 2020 or early 2021 at the earliest.
