We did wonder if the Bugs’ storyline from the Outlander books would end up being used in the show. We got it in Season 7, Episode 3.
Caution: This post contains spoilers from Outlander Season 7, Episode 3
The Bugs’ storyline doesn’t come up until the end of A Breath of Snow and Ashes, so we certainly had time fifth and sixth seasons to see the characters grow. The problem was that they weren’t used as much as in the books. Without really getting to know them, some fans did worry that their storyline wouldn’t play out.
To be honest, there are elements of their storylines that weren’t needed. However, the recent events in Outlander Season 7, Episode 3 are huge for Young Ian. All this leads to Young Ian being fearful of moving on. Does he really want to put a target on the person he falls in love with next?
Of course, when you see the Bugs’ storyline play out, there are questions about the two of them. Were they really all that loyal to the Frasers in the first place, or were they always there for the gold?
Understanding the Bugs in Outlander
In the books, we get to meet the Bugs first at the big gathering. That’s when Jamie invites them to the Ridge. It’s a chance for them to get back on their feet, as we hear about the hard life they’ve had since Culloden.
We didn’t get that in the show. All we’ve seen is these two characters around when they’ve been needed. Mrs. Bug has helped with the house, while Mr. Bug has done things outside the house—and shared his thoughts about Roger’s abilities outside.
I do think there was an element of loyalty to the Frasers. The Bugs raced around to find people to help when the Browns came for Claire at the end of Season 6. We saw Mrs. Bug help to take care of Claire when she fell ill thanks to Malva’s actions. All of this leads to us believing that she wasn’t just there for the gold.
However, her life and her husband were always going to be the most important things. For Arch, his wife was always going to be the most important thing to him. If it ever came down to it, they would always choose loyalty to each other over the loyalty to anyone else. And that’s what we saw in the new episode.
