Jesper got a book thrown at him during Shadow and Bone on Netflix. If you look closely enough, you’ll recognize it.

It’s certainly an amusing moment, and that may have led to overlooking the book that was on show. If you haven’t read the Shadow and Bone books, you may have also not recognized it. After all, the front cover of the book wasn’t even in English. It was in the language created for the series.

The book was in the Ravkan language, but the layout of the cover gives everything away. It’s led to questions about whether it was a shameless plug by the series for itself. Was that book the Ravkan version of Shadow and Bone?

Jesper did have the Ravkan version of Shadow and Bone thrown at him

It turns out that it was a version of the book, which the series is based on. It’s a one-of-a-kind copy of it, and you won’t be able to find it in book stores anywhere. If you do find it on sale, it’s a scam copy until someone from production confirms otherwise.

While the book is in another language, you can tell it’s the original series. The style of writing and the dark artwork around the edges matches that of original copies of the books.

Leigh Bardugo, author of the book series, shared that there was a Ravkan copy of the book more than a year ago! After production wrapped, she took to Instagram to show it off. At the time, we had no idea that it would have such an important part in the TV series.

There may have been other elements like this thrown in. And if the show does get a second season (we’re counting on it), then we’ll possibly see more of this type of shameless promotion added in. We certainly won’t complain!

One thing this does show is the level of work that was put into this series. Showrunner Eric Heisserer shared that the show didn’t have that much of a budget, and yet it had the time and money to put this level of detail into it. He made sure there was a great series!
