The Doctor Who 2020 holiday special will happen on time
With the global pandemic preventing shows from filming, there’s been concern about the fall. The Doctor Who 2020 holiday special is still going to happen on time.
There are a few things we all expect towards the end of the year. One of those for us is the Doctor Who holiday special.
With the global pandemic, there’s been a concern that the 2020 special isn’t going to happen. Film productions have had to shut down, which means the fall and winter for programming is currently up in the air. But there’s no need to worry about The Doctor and her fam.
According to Mandip Gill in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the Doctor Who 2020 holiday special shouldn’t have to be postponed. Filming has already completed. However, that doesn’t mean the whole of Doctor Who Season 13 is ready.
The cast and crew were really lucky
Filming for the holiday special had started earlier than many other fall shows would start filming. To be honest, I think this is more of a British thing. There are many shows that filmed in 2019 ready for a late 2020 release. I guess the British just like to be prepared.
The Doctor Who cast and crew were lucky. They’d finished filming the holiday special, titled “Revolution of the Daleks,” before the global health pandemic shut down filming in the UK. Post-production work would still need to happen, but that can all be done from home. It means there’s no need to delay the release of the holiday special. Now whether it’s going to be a Christmas special or a New Year’s Day special like the most recent one is unclear for now.

Doctor Who Season 13 still needs to film
What the cast and crew weren’t lucky about, by the sounds of things, is filming the whole of Season 13. The last few years, we’ve had the Christmas/New Year special and led straight into the next season. That didn’t used to be the case. We’d get the Christmas special and then have to wait a few months for the next season. It looks like the BBC will have to go back to the old way of doing things.
And honestly, that’s something I prefer. I like having a separate Christmas special; one that stands out to offer a themed story that’s separate to the rest. Sometimes it can just be The Doctor with a special guest star as an assistant and other times it can include the usual companions.
Season 13 hasn’t finished filming yet. We’ll get the holiday special and then have a break before the new season. Will that affect the feeling at the end of the holiday special? We’ll have to wait and see! What will be interesting to see is if Tosin Cole and Bradley Walsh, who play Ryan and Graham, will leave the series at the end as those are the current rumors.
