Daemon sang to a dragon in a pit in the House of the Dragon Season 1 finale. Who was the dragon, and is he important?
In the promo for the House of the Dragon Season 1 finale, we saw Daemon cautiously singing in some sort of cave or pit. It was clear this would be a major moment in the episode, but it was actually a little more subtle in the end. There was no explanation outright as to what he was doing, but we can put the pieces together based on what we know from conversations in the episode.
Daemon is preparing for war, and he’s doing it the only way he knows how. He’s preparing the dragons. He needs a few in particular, and one of them was one he was singing to.
Daemon called Vermithor in House of the Dragon
Daemon mentioned a few dragons while around the painted table. He made it clear that while the Greens have three—and arguably big—dragons, the Black shave more. As he mentioned some who had seen war, he also mentioned one in particular that was riderless. That certainly made Rhaena’s ears pick up as she is yet to claim a dragon.
Who was that dragon? It was Vermithor, who is one of the larger dragons in Westeros—although not as big as Vhagar—and has definitely seen war. This was Jaehaerys I’s dragon and has gone riderless since the late king’s death.
We can turn to Fire & Blood by George R.R. Martin* to find out what will happen to Vermithor. For now, we just know that Daemon is getting the dragons ready for war to make sure Team Black wins.
