The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5 has premiered, and it brought us some shocking twists. One of those twists involved two Handmaids.

Caution: There are spoilers for The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5 in this post.

Something The Handmaid’s Tale quickly taught us was to not believe that everyone would survive. We’ve seen a few characters meet shocking ends, including Alma and Brianna in Season 4. During the fifth season, we headed back to Gilead.

This wasn’t just about Serena Joy heading back for the state funeral for Fred. We headed back to Gilead for another reason. We had to check in on a couple of Handmaids. At the end of Season 4, we learned Janine ended up back in Aunt Lydia’s clutches and she convinced Esther to give up her hunger strike and become a Handmaid.

Of course, we couldn’t just see Esther give in. She has a fighting spirit like June, so she had a plan up her sleeve to potentially prevent being posted.

What happened to Esther and Janine in The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5?

Esther does not want to be posted. She’d already been raped multiple times as a Wife. Why would she want to subject herself to the ceremonies as a Handmaid. Of course, she was going to put up a fight, and she was going to take Janine down with her.

Esther brought food that wasn’t allowed to share with Janine. We immediately knew she was up to something. Esther had already made it clear she knew about plants that are poisonous. Of course she was going to make poisoned food for the two to share.

We left the two of them coughing up blood at the end of The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5. It looked like they were dead already as Aunt Lydia and who looked like Aunt Elizabeth called out for help.

It’s unlikely that the two will die, though. We know Janine is like a cat with nine lives, and there was a clip of Esther handcuffed to a hospital bed and that suggests she will survive.
