The 2023–2024 season officially gets started in a couple of weeks, and we’re going to be without the usual scripted content. Is there any hope for any of it to arrive this year?

We will get a few shows to get us through to the end of the year. There are some episodes of Quantum Leap Season 2 ready, and we know Found was ready in the midseason and was pushed to the fall. However, the majority of broadcast networks have zero scripted shows in the fall.

This is all due to the current strike action. It started with the WGA and now the SAG-AFTRA union has joined in. Negotiations aren’t happening, but that’s not because of the broadcast networks. The studios are the ones causing the problems; more specifically, the studios linked to the streamers.

When is the deadline for scripted content?

The 2023–2024 season could be completely affected. TVLine reports that the current strike action needs to come to an end before Oct. 1 if there is any hope of having a somewhat normal schedule. That means with the schedule ending in May 2024.

If it doesn’t come to an end, then, there will be shows that run into the summer. We know the networks don’t really want that to happen. After all, the summer months are when the linear ratings take a dive. The broadcast networks may decide to hold off until next fall to bring back the scripted shows. And then, not everything may make it back.

The streamers don’t quite have the same issue. They have content ready to go for the end of this year. It’s going to be next year that they’re affected. We’ve seen that Amazon has canceled The Peripheral and A League of Their Own, knowing that their 2024 slate is going to be heavily affected but not wanting to affect the 2025 slate.

Things aren’t looking great for a normal schedule for the scripted content.
