Is The Nevers good? Should you watch the HBO series?
The Nevers has premiered on HBO to mixed reviews. What’s the problem with the show, and is it worth sticking through it?
If you like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, you’ll notice a lot of it in The Nevers. The series is problematic due to the creator and original showrunner, Joss Whedon. The show pretty much is Buffy but set in Victorian London with a group of people magically Touched instead of the Chosen One to fight against the vampires. Oh, and the Touched are mostly women.
In fact, there are characters who are just like those from Buffy. Amalia is Buffy, Penance is Willow, and Maladie is Drusilla.
Does this make The Nevers a waste of time? Well, it depends on what you want.
100% a fantasy series
The show doesn’t hold much in the way of realism. If you want a TV show that allows you to just escape into a fantasy, it’s The Nevers.
There are just so many illogical moments in the series premiere. But at the same time, it was a bit of fun, there were humorous moments, and it’s hard not to like Penance (just like it was hard not to like Willow).
Don’t go into this expecting anything to make a lot of sense.
There’s just too much going on in The Nevers
The series premiere suffers a lot from having too much going on. We have Amalia’s storyline, which is about protecting the Touched. Then there’s Maladie’s storyline who wants the Touched for another reason. And then there’s a doctor who wants to experiment on the Touched.
Oh, we have the politicians who want to get rid of the touched. Then there’s the questions about who Amalia really is. And don’t forget whatever the Posh Boy is up to.
It’s a lot to take in with the premiere. Some of the storylines may have been better for later on. However, there is a chance that everything somehow converges into one since it all seems to be about the Touched.
I can’t tell you what will happen after the first episode because I haven’t seen it. What I can tell you is that a TV show usually takes two episodes or so to get into the story. At least check out the second episode.
