Will Netflix renew The Last Kingdom for Season 5?

The Last Kingdom Season 4 may have only just dropped, but we need to know about the future. Will Netflix renew the series for Season 5?

Hands up if you’ve binge-watched the entire fourth season of The Last Kingdom already? At Channel Watchers, we managed it in a day, sharing our breakdown of each episode on Twitter as we watched it.

There were certainly highs and lows throughout the season. We cheered, we cried, and we screamed at the screens. One thing we know now is that we want The Last Kingdom Season 5 to happen. Well, honestly, we already knew we wanted it. This is one of the best shows on TV right now. It’s better than Game of Thrones!

So, will Netflix cancel or renew The Last Kingdom for Season 5? The streamer hasn’t made a decision yet, and it looks like the writers were worried about being canceled. The season finale (no major spoilers if you haven’t watched it yet) certainly seemed to tie a lot of things up neatly. Yes, there are questions and storylines that could be brought back, but this felt like what could have been a series finale if necessary.

That doesn’t mean we’re ready for this intense series to come to an end. It doesn’t mean we don’t want to know what happens next. And I certainly need to see more of Stiorra—she’s an excellent mix of both her parents.

Netflix’s habit of canceling shows

Netflix has a bad habit of canceling popular shows at this point. Once a series gets to the second season, I start to worry. The costs of production increase considerably, so Netflix needs to know that there’s a following for the series. During the first two seasons, Netflix didn’t have as much to lose. The third season was more like the first season of a global Netflix Original, so the fourth season was a little more certain. It’s like the second season. Now we start to worry.

We have seen some Netflix Originals get past the fourth season. Orange Is the New Black got to Season 7, so there’s a precedent. Did enough people binge-watch on the first day of release, though?

Part of me feels like Netflix wanted to make it difficult to binge-watch. It’s not often a Netflix Original drops on a Sunday. Those who wanted to binge-watch by the end of the weekend had to be dedicated and not everyone would be able to spend 10 hours watching on show, especially when Penny Dreadful: City of Angels and Vida Season 3 premiered on the same day. Did we win, Netflix?
