Hoping for Max and Helen to get together on New Amsterdam Season 3? There’s going to be another barrier in the way.

If you were hoping to see Max and Helen get together in New Amsterdam Season 3, it sounds like there’s a bit longer to wait. There’s going to be another barrier in the way, and it’s in the form of a new doc.

We’ve briefly got to know this new doc. His official introduction was in the postponed superflu episode, but we did get a few clips to see that introduction and immediately get to know the character. The finale gave us another look, including the respect that he is gaining from Dr. Helen Sharpe. The problem is Max isn’t that much of a fan of the new guy.

Showrunner David Schulner told TVLine that Dr. Shin, played by the awesome Daniel Dae Kim, is going to be a problem for Max and Helen’s relationship. Even if Shin and Helen weren’t hitting things off, Max is not a fan of the way Shin handles things in the hospital. The two have vastly different approaches.

New Amsterdam: Season One

It’s going to be an intense season of New Amsterdam

Things certainly look intense for Max. He’s getting to grips with being a single father, putting his daughter first every step of the way. At the same time, he’s gaining confidence in searching for a life outside of the hospital and his daughter but also finding a way to balance everything. It’s not easy as a parent in general. As a single parent who is still grieving the loss of his wife, it’s even harder.

Helen has always been that rock. While the two didn’t seem to have much in common in the New Amsterdam series premiere, it was quickly clear that Helen did put her patients first. She was glad to be able to go back to treating her patients instead of doing the marketing for the hospital. At the same time, she’s taken her demotion well, but also found ways to be like Max to make sure patients have got the care they need.

Dr. Shin is switching things up. He values his time. If a patient doesn’t need him specifically, he’s not going to be there. He knows that if he’s running on low fuel, his patients don’t get the best care. The minute he is needed, he is there for them. It’s something we saw in the brief clips from the superflu episode and the New Amsterdam Season 2 finale.

Helen will find herself trapped between Shin and Max, not only on a personal level but on a professional level. It’s certainly going to be fun to see.
