Prodigal Son canceled: No Season 3 at FOX
We have the worst news for all Prodigies around the world. FOX has canceled Prodigal Son after two seasons.
That’s right! TVLine shared the disappointing news about the future of Prodigal Son on FOX. There is not going to be a third season on the network.
While FOX hasn’t officially confirmed why it was canceled, it looks to be linked to the viewership. As we feared, the live ratings just weren’t good enough to justify another season of the series. That doesn’t mean the decision was an easy one. The network wanted to save the series because of the storytelling, which is why there was a push for a high-profile actress to join. The show had hoped Catherine Zeta-Jones would pull in new eyeballs.
Sadly, that didn’t happen. However, you can’t deny that FOX had a promotional push for the series. It just wasn’t meant to be.
Will Netflix, Amazon, or Hulu save Prodigal Son?
Now eyes are on whether a streaming network will save Prodigal Son. It wouldn’t be the first time a streamer stepped in to save a broadcast or cable show. Netflix has saved Lucifer, while Amazon has saved The Expanse.
The benefit of a streaming service is the international fanbase. While broadcast networks can only pay attention to the U.S. viewership data, the streamers can look at international data. It’s going to be up to social media now to make enough noise to help get the show saved.
This isn’t a guarantee, though. We just have to look at Timeless with the loud voices and lack of the series being saved. This was due to the cost of the series, where Prodigal Son doesn’t have such a high cost involved. There’s no guarantee that a streamer will step in, but there’s no harm in making some noise.
If anything, it’s going to be Amazon or Netflix. Hulu is U.S.-only.
