Will Prodigal Son be renewed for a second season?
FOX is making quick decisions about the futures of various shows. Will Prodigal Son be one of the freshman shows renewed for Season 2?
Many TV shows remain on the bubble. FOX still has to make a number of decisions, with the fate of Prodigal Son being one of them. What are the chances of the new TV crime drama being canceled or renewed?
There are a few positives for Prodigal Son right now. One of those is that it quickly got a full-season order. After just a handful of episodes, FOX wanted more. That’s not surprising considering the excellent start it got. But how is it doing now? What are the chances that there will be more episodes?
We don’t get access to a lot of the figures FOX uses to make decisions. However, we can look at the live ratings to determine if this is likely to be a show canceled or renewed for the 2020-2021 season.
Prodigal Son Season 2 is likely to happen
I don’t have much doubt in FOX choosing to renew the series. According to TV Series Finale, the series sits eighth out of 15 scripted shows. Okay, not the best ever, but it’s good enough. Especially right now! Pilots have been postponed, which means FOX either has to take a risk on a show that it hasn’t watched yet or keep a medium-performing show. Chances are it’s going to take the chances on giving a freshman show a second season.
Something to keep in mind that while it’s the eighth show in terms of demo, it sits fifth when the audience is taken into account. It’s also the third-best drama, behind 9-1-1 and 9-1-1: Lone Star. This suggests a renewal. As the second-best performing freshman drama and the third-best performing freshman overall, there’s no need for FOX to even consider canceling Prodigal Son.
A second season is likely necessary
Unlike Deputy, which has been canceled after just one season, Prodigal Son isn’t going to get to finish out its first season. Production on the show was halted and it’s coming in two episodes short. This isn’t uncommon with the fall dramas this season, but it suggests that there will be some major questions. We won’t get the ending expected and storylines will need to continue into a second season. We’ll need that renewal to make sure we get the answers.
I don’t think we’ll be saying goodbye this year. However, I do fear that FOX will do something to the schedule that puts it in danger for Season 2.

Prodigal Son is currently available to watch on FOX and stream afterward on Hulu.
