The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5 is just around the corner. Is there a chance Serena Joy can be redeemed with everything going on?
At one point in The Handmaid’s Tale*, it looked like Serena Joy had realized she’d backed the wrong horse. Helping Gilead come to fruition gained her nothing but oppression and a hobby that she hates—knitting. Then she turned back against those feelings. She wanted her daughter back, and would stop at nothing to make that happen.
Yet, she almost gained some sort of redemption again. She turned Fred into the Americans so he could be tried for war crimes. Then she did another U-turn, and she stood by his side after he turned against her. It was a huge mess, but there are some fans still holding out hope for Serena Joy’s redemption. Is that even possible?
Serena Joy doesn’t regret her actions in The Handmaid’s Tale
There is one thing needed for redemption: regret. She needs to realize that she was wrong to bring about Gilead, but that isn’t happening.
For a while, she realized the risks to baby Nichole. She even allowed June to get the baby out, although changed her mind afterward. But Serena Joy knows that Gilead isn’t a good place for women. That doesn’t mean she’s against it all. She still believes that women are really only any good for bearing children.
Without regret and sorrow, there is no redemption possible. I doubt that is going to happen in The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5. Fred is gone now. She’ll go back as a Widow based on the trailer, and she’ll have some sort of protection due to her pregnancy. However, she doesn’t really think that Gilead is all that terrible.
Until she accepts that Gilead is wrong and works with June to bring it down, there is no redemption for this character. It really is as simple as that.
