Will Serena Joy become a Handmaid on The Handmaid’s Tale Season 4?

Fred and Serena Joy are united for now, but how long will that last? Should Serena Joy be concerned on The Handmaid’s Tale Season 4?

Caution: There are spoilers for The Handmaid’s Tale Season 4, Episode 8 in this post. We’re also touching on the promo for Episode 9.

Okay, June is now out of Gilead. She’s finally made it to Canada, although it meant leaving Hannah behind. As much as she wants to get her daughter back, getting out of Gilead was probably the best thing she could do. It’s not like she doesn’t have a couple of sort-of friends left in the country.

However, we’re looking at a story of trauma for June from this point on. She’s understandably angry, and during the recent episode of The Handmaid’s Tale, she found out Serena Joy is pregnant. Now she wants to see Serena Joy lose her child, and not in a way that harms the child. She just wants the child taken away from Serena Joy.

It looks like that could happen. Even worse for Serena Joy, it looks like Gilead wants to make her a Handmaid. Right now, Serena Joy is in a Canadian prison, but could they send her back to Gilead considering what Gilead would like to do as punishment?

Could The Handmaid’s Tale offer poetic justice against Serena Joy?

It’s actually really hard to write this, but becoming a Handmaid could be the perfect justice for Serena Joy. She never had to worry about this when she thought she couldn’t conceive. When doctors said it wasn’t possible, Serena Joy simply got away with almost anything. All she had to do was make sure she didn’t anger the Commanders to the point that she would be sent to the Colonies.

Now that she can get pregnant, Gilead has another woman to become a Handmaid. And Serena Joy is scared about that happening.

Wasn’t she the woman who said that being a Handmaid was a “blessing?” Didn’t she say that women should be “grateful” for becoming Handmaids?

Clearly, she is just a hypocrite. She knows exactly what happens, and that’s not something she wants to happen to herself.

This is what makes it such perfect justice. There are some people who just don’t deserve redemption arcs. In the earlier days of The Handmaid’s Tale, I would have said that Serena Joy may have just being pushed down or forced into the regime, but we know she had a part in creating it. She isn’t sorry for anything that’s happened and has only done things to look out for herself. She doesn’t deserve redemption.

Instead, she deserves everything that Gilead could throw at her. It’s time for her to experience everything she put other women through.

And it is possible for wives to become Handmaids. The Handmaid’s Tale Season 4, Episode 9 promo gives us a snapshot of what’s to come for Mrs. Keyes. Take a look:
