Supergirl canceled: Show to end with Season 6

Supergirl Season 6 is going to be the last. We’ll get a 20-episode season to say goodbye to the characters.

It’s a sad day for fans of the Girl of Steel. Supergirl Season 6 is going to be the end of the series.

Entertainment Weekly shared that it’s not yet clear if the network chose to cancel the show or whether this is a decision by the creators. We could see it being either way for a number of reasons. Whatever the reason, the writers have time to craft an ending storyline.

It marks the second Arrowverse series to come to an end, following Arrow‘s ending with a shortened Season 8. It’s also the fourth CW show to come to an end during 2020 and 2021, with The 100 and Supernatural bringing their shows to an end in September and November respectively.

A delayed return to The CW

While it is possibly a show decision, it could also be a network decision. The superhero series is the last one returning in 2021, filming around Melissa Benoist’s pregnancy. While the likes of The Flash and Black Lightning will return in January 2021, Supergirl Season 6 isn’t set to premiere until spring. The series will start filming next week but Benoist won’t join until after her baby is born.

The ratings have been slipping for the last couple of seasons, and there’s a spin-off series planned for January 2021. Rumor has it that the Kara Danvers series was always going to end with a way to bring a Superman series, and that’s exactly what has now happened.

Either way, just getting a good ending will be enough for many. Creators have been struggling with final seasons for some time, especially with CW shows. Hopefully, this series can change that.

A 20-episode order for Supergirl Season 6

There is some good news that comes with the ending. The sixth and final season will have 20 episodes.

It sounds like there are plans to shorten the seasons of broadcast shows for this year. It will help get things back to normal for the 2021-2022 season since filming will hopefully be able to return to normal next summer. However, The CW and the series know that bringing a story to a proper conclusion is important for fans. It sounds like Supergirl‘s sixth season was extended to allow this to happen.

With Superman & Lois, there is always the chance of characters returning. This probably isn’t the last we’ve seen of Kara Danvers or the Luthers.
