Is The Alienist: Angel of Darkness too obvious right now?

It looks like we know who the kidnapper is on The Alienist: Angel of Darkness. However, is this too obvious four episodes into the season?

The Alienist has never been known for its predictable writing. Looking at the first season, we were taken on an intriguing journey, as we thought we’d figured it out only to realize that we were all way off. That makes me wonder whether The Alienist: Angel of Darkness is really going to be as obvious as it currently seems.

Caution: There are spoilers from The Alienist: Angel of Darkness Episodes 3 and 4.

During the most recent back-to-back episodes, it looks like we’ve found out who has kidnapped Baby Ana and killed the McNabb baby. Yet, doesn’t it just seem a little too obvious for a show like this?

A mentally ill ward girl

The two episodes introduced us to a couple of ward girls. One of them was Libby, who offered a little bit of information to Sara Howard to “help” with the case. Instead, it sent the team on a bit of a wild goose chase, as Libby’s mental health grew considerably worse.

Without anyone watching her, Libby snapped. She tried to poison Bitsy and then made her way to the matron’s apartment. It looks like she’s snapped, killing matron and painting the eyes in the way the McNabb baby was found.

It certainly suggests that Libby is the one who took the McNabb baby and Baby Ana. However, it just seems too obvious.

There’s something going on in that hospital

We can’t overlook the hospital. There’s clearly something going on. Of course, it could be that the doctor is just doing what he thinks is right, sterilizing women he doesn’t think should have children. Maybe he believes that this is a charitable act.

However, there just seems to be something more serious going on. He is telling women giving birth to healthy babies that those babies are stillborn. This suggests that he has something to do with the McNabb baby and Baby Ana.

Of course, it is possible that Libby was connected to Baby Ana. However, she may not be connected to the McNabb baby. This allows the team to find Baby Ana and reunite mother and daughter, while still having a bigger mystery to solve: who killed the McNabb baby?
