The Crown going back to original plan of six seasons
The Crown will have six seasons after all. Creator Peter Morgan has decided he needs the extra season to fully tell the story.
Six months ago, Peter Morgan disappointed many be deciding to end The Crown‘s run with just five seasons. It was one season shorter than originally planned.
That’s not the case anymore. According to Deadline, Morgan has rethought the decision. He needs the extra season to tell the story, so The Crown Season 6 is back on.
We know that Harry Potter‘s Imelda Staunton and Mum‘s Lesley Manville will play Queen Elizabeth and Princess Margaret respectively. They’ll be there for both Seasons 5 and 6.
Why the change of heart?
When Morgan decided to cut to just one season, he said it was because there weren’t enough stories to tell across two seasons of 10 episodes. Well, it turns out that’s not the case.
As the writers have broken down the stories, they realize that there isn’t enough time in 10 episodes for the stories in enough detail. So, it’s back to the plan of six seasons to finish the story.
However, don’t expect the show to catch up to the present day. I don’t think that was ever the plan. Instead, the show will still bring it up to the date planned for the fifth season but flesh out the individual stories better.

Where in the Queen’s story will The Crown end?
The plan is to bring the story up to the early 2000s. This will likely bring us up to the deaths of The Queen Mother and Princess Margaret, as well as showing us the aftermath of the death of Diana, Princess of Wales. Much of Seasons 5 and 6 will likely also be centered on Prince Charles and Diana’s marriage and subsequent divorce.
What we won’t see is any of the current events happening, or even anything recent. There will be nothing about Kate Middleton or Meghan Markle since they both came in the late 2000s and onward.
