The Last Kingdom: Uhtred’s missing son explained by executive producer
Fans of The Last Kingdom noticed Uhtred’s youngest son was left out of Season 4. EP of the series Nigel Marchant explains why this was decided.
The Last Kingdom Season 4 dropped on Netflix last weekend. If you were anything like us you would have binged watch all 10 episodes in a single day, maybe two, and you thoroughly enjoyed every minute.
It was not a perfect season, however. There were some minor flaws that occurred throughout, the most noticeable being Uhtred’s youngest son, who went missing.
Season 4 introduced us to Young Uhtred, the eldest son, portrayed by Finn Elliot, and Stiorra, Uhtred’s daughter, portrayed by Ruby Harley, but Uhtred’s youngest son was completely non-existent. In fact, we don’t even think he was acknowledged once.
So, we obviously wondered what happened, fans also wondered what happened. Thankfully, we have an answer.
Executive Producer Nigel Marchant explained to Radio Times the reasoning behind why the character was written out and it all came down to there being too many new characters to introduce in The Last Kingdom Season 4:
“…we’re always conscious about bringing in new characters…”
“…we only had 10 episodes and so many hours and so many storylines…”
“…we really felt that we were introducing Uhtred’s two children, we also had Aelfwynn and Aethelstan who were caught up in all the action, and just that it would be one character too many.”
“We don’t like to deviate from the books…”
“…sometimes it just doesn’t work. But that’s not to say that we couldn’t see them in the future.”
It is an understandable reason. Cuts ultimately need to be made somewhere from the books by Bernard Cornwell. They’re also not ruling out the character being introduced in a future season, so we could see him appear one day.
Thing is. Why not mention him? Just a small acknowledgement would have been good. Especially if you’re not ruling him out for future seasons.
It is what it is though. The season is now out for all to stream on Netflix so they cannot really go back and add this minor detail in. At least we finally have an answer to the mystery.
