If you were confused by the January plans on FOX, you’re not alone. It turns out The Resident Season 6 is a shorter season than normal.
There were some major changes to the FOX lineup announced for January 2023. One of those is that 911 Lone Star is moving from Mondays to Tuesdays. It’s taking over The Resident‘s timeslot, but the medical drama is on the list of January premieres.
How does that work? Well, it turns out that the start of January is to give the show time to air the final episodes of the season. Like many other shows on various networks, FOX has given the medical drama a shorter season order than normal.
The Resident Season 6 episode count
After the January lineup was announced, fans took to Twitter to find out what was going on. Creator Amy Holden Jones shared that there will only be 13 episodes in The Resident Season 6.
This is the way a lot of shows are going. Broadcast shows—and really any TV show—are expensive to make. Not so many are watching broadcast live anymore, and that’s leading to lower budgets because people aren’t watching the commercials that fun the shows. With that in mind, the broadcast networks need to cut costs.
The best way to do that is to reduce episode counts. This is also beneficial for the actors as they get more time with their families between seasons. When Supernatural was reduced from 23 episodes to 20 for the last couple of seasons, Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki explained that the move gave them an extra couple of months at home with their families.
