What are the chances of The Rookie being renewed for a third season? That’s the question for today as we look at the chances of ABC canceling the TV crime dramedy.

Like with previous posts like this, we can only assess the live TV ratings. However, ABC will take a number of other ratings into consideration, including how the series is performing on Hulu now that episodes head there the day after airing on ABC. We’ll make an educated guess based on the live TV ratings, as reported by TV Series Finale.

Sunday was a good move

I know there were a lot of people worried about the fate of The Rookie when ABC announced its 2019 fall schedule last May. Sunday nights can be terrible for TV shows, viewed as a death slot by many. However, the TV crime dramedy has benefitted from the move to Sunday nights, especially since more people are home. Plus, since ABC would have lower expectations, it meant the show was a little safer than it would have been on a weekday night.

The decision to move to Sundays has been beneficial. It’s not been up against as many high-profile shows, starting with the ending of Madam Secretary and now against NCIS: New Orleans on CBS. It’s also not seen a huge drop in the ratings compared to the first season. Losing 12% of the demo is about standard. Yet, the total audience has increased. Just with that news, it’s likely that The Rookie Season 3 is happening.

The Rookie performs well for ABC

As well as looking at its success on Sundays, we need to assess its success among other ABC shows. This offers more good news for fans.

The Rookie sits 11th out of all 20 scripted TV shows in terms of the demo. It’s sixth out of all shows in terms of the live audience. This is a strong position, especially for a Sunday night series.

Right now, ABC hasn’t made many decisions. We already knew Grey’s Anatomy was renewed for Season 17 going into Season 16 and now Station 19 has been renewed for a fourth season. The Good Doctor has also been renewed. How to Get Away With Murder and Modern Family were confirmed as the final seasons when they were renewed and it didn’t take long for Fresh Off the Boat to be canceled. But that’s been it.

With pilots postponed, a lot of shows that would usually be canceled are likely to be renewed. I think there’s a lot of hope for The Rookie Season 3.
