The Underground Railroad coming to Amazon Prime Video in May 2021
Amazon Prime Video continues its push for diversity and inclusivity. The latest arrival is The Underground Railroad, coming in May.
You’ve heard of The Underground Railroad. The most famous conductor was Harriet Tubman, a former slave who managed to escape and make it to Philadelphia on her own. Her own tale was remarkable, but then she took it upon herself to head back to the plantation and save her family and others.
This version isn’t the story of Tubman. There are movies out there about her and an episode of Timeless focuses on this strong and courageous woman.
All 10 episodes of the series will arrive on Friday, May 14 on Amazon Prime Video.
What is The Underground Railroad about?
Instead, the Amazon series will adapt the Colson Whitehead Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name. It is a fictional novel that involves a very real underground railroad, with a series of tunnels and tracks under America’s south.
The book (and the series) follows Cora Randall, a slave who makes a desperate escape for freedom. She finds out that the rumored Underground Railroad is actually a real series of tracks.
While she attempts to escape, Ridgeway is a bounty hunter who will do whatever he can to get her back to the plantation. After all, there’s a bounty on her head to return her to her masters. This is more than just a job, though. Cora’s mother, Mabel, is the only runaway slave he’s never caught. Now this has become personal.
That’s right; Cora has to think of the mother who once left her behind. Will she learn of what became of her mother along the way?
