The Village: An enjoyable surprise that has something for everyone
The Village aired its series premiere last night on NBC and what was clear from the very get-go was the promo held a lot back. As there was plenty of surprises and a little something for everyone.
I don’t know about you, but promos have been a bit up and down over the last few years. When I cast my mind back I remember talking to friends and family about how promos pretty much gave everything away. You could quite literally watch all the promos released and you would know how things were going to play out. Bringing ourselves back to present day and we have the polar opposite of that problem. Promos no longer give away the entire plot, but they also don’t tell us anything either. However, after watching the premiere of The Village last night, it was clear they have found the perfect balance.
If you missed the promo for the latest NBC series I’ve dropped it just below for you to take a look at.
What I imagined going into The Village was a story that would focus around ex-soldier Nick Porter. Because what I got from the promo was after losing a limb due to an IED he moves into an apartment building filled with very kind people who will do what they can to help Nick to adjust and get used to his new life. You might have got something else from the promo but that’s what I got.
So it was a huge surprise to discover very early on in the series premiere characters being introduced, all of whom live in this apartment building, who did not appear in the promo, at all. Characters who are clearly going to be instrumental to the series moving forward. It was a great thing to see as it captured my attention, my imagination, and I wanted to know who these people were and why they were so important.

Along with these new characters, other storylines, not connected to Nick, where also being introduced. And these too are storylines that will be instrumental moving forward. I’m only just scratching the surface of what happened in the premiere but among Nick’s storyline, we also had a teen pregnancy, a potential cancer diagnosis, and an Iranian immigrant detained by ICE.
There was just so much surprise during this premiere. So much I wasn’t expecting. And it worked. It was brilliantly written and well executed. Now for some, it wouldn’t have worked. For some, too many storylines is not a good thing, and that is fine. But if you are someone who likes to move from storyline to storyline and see how they intertwine with one another, which they will, then The Village is for you.
It is still early days right now to say if this is the next big thing or not. We will know in the next few weeks if it will maintain its momentum or not. But based on the series premiere alone. It is off to a great start.
