After five years, Tom Brittney is saying goodbye to Will Davenport in Grantchester. When will he leave the series?
Tom Brittney rode into Grantchester on a motorcycle five years ago. He was immediately pulled into the crime solving nature of his predecessor, despite being there as the vicar. Now it’s time for him to move onto pastures new.
While the eighth season has just premiered on PBS, the ninth season is currently filming in the UK. Brittney confirmed that he is leaving the show, and a new vicar is coming into town. Hollyoaks’s Rishi Nair is coming into the show as the new vicar, Alphy Kotteram, according to TVLine.
When will Tom Brittney leave Granchester?
While it looks like he will be around for some of Season 9, it’s not clear how much. This could be something similar to his predecessor James Norton, who played Sidney Chambers. During the two-part Season 4 premiere, Sidney decided to leave Grantchester for America to follow his heart. That brought in Will Davenport.
We could see a two-part story set up to say goodbye to Will properly. There was the knowledge of this ahead of time, which would allow the writers to craft a storyline.
Unlike the shows in the U.S., the shows in the UK are able to be worked on as nobody is on strike…yet. There are concerns from the UK writers about AI and we could see a fight against that at some point in the future.
