Everything to know about Amazon’s Undone coming this week

Looking for something a little different to watch? Amazon Prime is bringing a new original, an adult animation. Here’s all you should know about Undone.

As streaming services start to get bigger, they start taking more risks. That’s the case with Amazon, which is finally entering the world of adult animation with its latest original series, Undone. Here’s everything you need to know about the series.

Undone Season 1 will touch on both life and death. After a car accident, Alma gains a new relationship with time. Part of that relationship opens the truth about her father’s untimely death. She may not be able to trust the people closest to her.

While at San Diego Comic-Con 2019, the series certainly gained a lot of praise from the critics and fans. This series involves two storylines: the mundane, everyday life and the sci-fi thriller of figuring out what really happened to Alma’s father. They two stories intertwine to bring one exciting tale that focuses on mental illness and what it means to live.

It’s the focus on mental illness that is so positive. While many shows tend to treat depression as just a plot point, there are others that will delve deeper into what it means to suffer from depression and mental illness. Undone is the latter, as it touches on Alma’s mundane life—a life that she’s bored of living.

Who stars in the series?

Undone is from the BoJack Horseman creative team, Raphael Bob-Waksberg and Kate Purdy. Rosa Salazar from Alita: Battle Angel stars as Alma, with Bob Odenkirk as the voice of her father, Jacob. Angelique Cabral, Constance Marie, Daveed Diggs, and Siddharth Dhananjay also star in the series.

The show was given a one-season straight-to-series order by Amazon after hearing the pitch. It’s clear that Amazon had faith from the beginning, and that faith is paying off.

Is it over-the-top sci-fi?

There are going to be times that the season feels over-the-top or the powers are convenient. However, this isn’t a flaw within the series. It’s the whole point of the series.

You’re left in a world where you question everything. Does Alma really have the powers that she’s experiencing or is she losing her mind? This is something Alma questions throughout the earlier episodes, making you feel and experience everything that she does. It’s the beauty of the series when, otherwise, surrounded by fantastical series where everything happens conveniently for the characters.

How is Undone created?

While most adult animation is done with graphics, Undone uses rotoscoping. This is the process of tracing over filmed footage, and you’ll want to check out the video Amazon released recently of the process. The process offers a more realistic look at animation, still offering an otherworldly feel but offering a more grounded approach when needed.

There are more expressions with this type of animation. You’ll get to feel more from the characters, which isn’t possible with straight animation.
