ABC has picked up The Good Doctor for Season 7, but it didn’t come with a pickup of the spin-off. When could we hear about The Good Lawyer?

When we found out about The Good Doctor* being renewed, we had hoped that it would come with something about the spin-off series. ABC brought us a backdoor pilot for The Good Lawyer back in March. The bad news is that so far the network hasn’t made a decision on the spin-off just yet.

This isn’t too surprising. Despite The Rookie: Feds performing well when it had its backdoor pilot in The Rookie, we didn’t hear anything about the pickup until May. So, that’s what we’re looking at for the newer spin-off series.

Will The Good Lawyer happen at ABC?

The ratings for the backdoor pilot were pretty good. It helps that Kennedy McMann has a following due to Nancy Drew, and fans will want to see where she’s going to next and support that move. The question is whether the ratings were good enough. ABC knows that it will have The Good Doctor fans who may not be that interested in a legal drama but watched to see whether Shaun would lose his medical license or not.

ABC won’t want to make a decision until May when the Upfronts are. This will give the network time to look at all the remaining shows on the network and all the pilots that have come through. There is then the discussion as to which of the shows are more likely to perform better on the network.

With hope, Kennedy McMann’s drama has proven to be a success. We’ll just have to wait for the May Upfronts to see which of the shows have been picked up.
